Trauma Informed Schools Initiative

The Trauma Informed School Initiative is a shift in focus within the educational system. Missouri educators are challenged to consider how a student's life circumstances can impact their ability to learn and to recognize the many ways that traumatic experiences can manifest through student behaviors within the classroom. The Trauma Informed Schools Initiative represents a spectrum that ranges from Trauma Aware to Trauma Informed. St. James R-1 educators are actively and diligently working to advance our schools along the Trauma Informed spectrum. Implementation of programs such as Capturing Kids' Hearts and ICU provide the foundation of positive relationships between students and staff. Professional Development efforts continue to include opportunities to learn more about the effects of trauma, mental health concerns, and the application of practical strategies for improving our response to student needs. The St. James School District is embracing this initiative as another way to improve the lives and education of our students. Our goal is to send our students to their futures with confidence, support, and the skills that will help them succeed personally and professionally, making them productive and influential members of our community.
